Volvo has been a leader in car safety for nearly 100 years, with a clear objective to eradicate car accidents. Volvo is constantly working to improve our automobile systems to decrease the possibility of severe car and collision accidents through research, development, and the launch of some of the most advanced and efficient technologies to date. Volvo will keep working to achieve our goal of zero fatalities and severe injuries in new vehicles.
Volvo offers one of the most advanced sensor systems on the market with the Volvo EX90 electric SUV, which will be released on November 9, 2022. The Volvo EX90 will feature a set of eight cameras, five radars, 16 ultrasonic sensors, and a cutting-edge LiDAR sensor.
LiDAR, which stands for "Light Detection and Ranging," is a distant detection method that measures distances with high precision and dependability by using light as a pulsing laser.
"LiDAR can make a significant difference in everyday safety: according to our latest research, equipping a car with LiDAR can lower the number of major accidents by up to 20% and improve total collision avoidance by up to 9%."
"Our LiDAR technology, built into the roofline of the forthcoming EX90, can detect pedestrians up to 250 meters distant as well as something as little and dark as a tire on a dark road 120 meters ahead of the car. All while traveling at motorway speeds. Unlike a camera, LiDAR is not affected by light; thus, it can defend you anytime."
We are launching a car that sets utterly new safety standards by combining our advanced sensors, internally designed software, and the car's computer capacity. A vehicle that, more than ever before, can detect various possible hazards - both outside and within.
The car will not only be able to assist the driver. It will also recognize when it is essential to intervene and how, in that instance, it must help in the best way possible.
"We believe that the EX90 will be the safest Volvo yet," says Joachim de Verdier, Volvo Cars' head of Safe Vehicle Automation. "We combine our information of the outside environment with our more detailed understanding of you as a driver, particularly your attentiveness." When all of our safety systems, sensors, software, and processing power work together, they form a preventive safety barrier around you that you are unaware of until you need it."
An autonomous driving system will be included in the Volvo EX90 once it has received the safety certification and all other approvals.
