SEAT and CUPRA have started production of the CUPRA Raval and Volkswagen ID. Polo at Martorell, giving Spain a front-line role in the Volkswagen Group's next phase of compact electric cars. This matters because the Electric Urban Car Family targets one of Europe's hardest segments: affordable, usable, fully electric hatchbacks with real WLTP range, fast charging, and city-friendly dimensions.
In addition, SEAT and CUPRA lead the project for Volkswagen Group's Brand Group Core, using shared architecture to cut cost and complexity. The group says this cross-brand setup delivers 600 million euros in cost savings, while Martorell has received more than 3 billion euros in transformation investment. That turns the factory into a mixed-production hub for electric, hybrid, and efficient combustion models.
CUPRA Raval vs Volkswagen ID. Polo: Key Data
| Model | Platform | Length | Width | Height | Wheelbase | WLTP Range |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| CUPRA Raval | MEB+ | 4,046 mm | 1,784 mm | 1,518 mm | 2,600 mm | Around 450 km |
| Volkswagen ID. Polo | MEB+ | 4,053 mm | 1,816 mm | 1,530 mm | 2,600 mm | Up to 454 km |
Looking at the data, both cars use the same 2,600 mm wheelbase, but they speak to different buyers. The Volkswagen ID. Polo plays the rational card with up to 454 km WLTP, 441 litres of boot volume, Vehicle-to-Load, and an entry price from 24,995 euros in Germany. The CUPRA Raval runs harder at the emotional end of the segment, with 17-, 18-, and 19-inch wheels, CUP bucket seats, door-panel light projections, and outputs from 116 to 226 PS.
Battery, Charging, And Strategy
| Area | Volkswagen ID. Polo | CUPRA Raval | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Battery options | 37 kWh LFP, 52 kWh NMC | Two battery sizes confirmed | Low-cost LFP supports entry pricing |
| DC charging | 90 kW or 105 kW | Version-dependent | Short urban charging stops improve daily use |
| Drive layout | Front-wheel drive | Front-wheel drive | Lowers packaging cost and increases cabin space |
| Power output | 116, 135, 211, 226 PS GTI | 116 to 226 PS | Covers fleet, private, and sport buyers |
| Market focus | Practical electric supermini | Sportier urban EV | Shared hardware, distinct brand positioning |
Specifically, the MEB+ front-drive setup gives both cars compact exterior dimensions and a long cabin footprint. By comparison, the ID. Polo measures shorter than the petrol Polo but uses a longer wheelbase, which explains the strong boot capacity and rear-seat packaging.
Pro-Tip: Which One Should European Buyers Watch?
Choose the Volkswagen ID. Polo if price, boot space, V2L power, and low running costs sit at the top of your list. Choose the CUPRA Raval if you want sharper design, higher visual drama, and a sportier urban EV without moving into a larger crossover.
From an expert perspective, Martorell now gives Volkswagen Group a credible answer to Renault 5, Fiat Grande Panda, and incoming Chinese compact EVs. Consequently, the CUPRA Raval and Volkswagen ID. Polo could become Europe's most important small EV launch pair of 2026.
