Mercedes-Benz Servotwin Upgrade Delivers Smarter Steering for Heavy Trucks

Mercedes-Benz Servotwin

Daimler Truck Targets Precision and Control with Servotwin Upgrade

Mercedes-Benz Trucks just raised the bar on heavy-duty truck steering. The new Servotwin system isn’t a redesign—it’s a direct upgrade. Built on the proven dual-circuit architecture, this system introduces electric steering assistance with torque overlay. The result is greater handling precision, improved safety, and lower maintenance costs.

The Servotwin system targets trucks with high front axle loads. These are the most demanding use cases—long hauls, tight urban routes, and frequent distribution stops. Daimler’s solution cuts through the complexity and delivers one clear benefit: better control.

Key Features: What’s New in the Servotwin System

This version improves nearly every metric that matters:

  • Enhanced steering precision at highway speeds
  • Selectable steering modes under 18.6 mph (30 km/h)
  • Automatic steering wheel return to center
  • Improved lane stability
  • Zero-play center position
  • No buffer battery required

Let’s break that down further.

Improved Handling at All Speeds

The system layers electric torque over hydraulic input. That means steering becomes more responsive at any speed, with greater stability at higher velocities. Steering corrections feel smoother, especially on highways where lane-keeping matters.

The upgrade boosts straight-line stability, reducing the vehicle’s sensitivity to ruts and uneven surfaces. Long-distance drivers benefit from reduced steering effort, while fleet owners see gains in safety and reduced driver fatigue.

Steering Customization for Urban Operations

Below 30 km/h, the driver can choose between three steering modes. These adjust both steering assistance and how quickly the wheel returns to center.

Each mode supports a different driving environment:

  1. Light Assistance Mode – Ideal for urban stop-and-go traffic
  2. Balanced Mode – Mix of precision and ease
  3. Heavy Load Mode – Useful for narrow depot maneuvering

Active Center Return and Zero-Play Feel

The steering wheel now automatically returns to center after cornering. This helps reduce driver fatigue during city driving or repetitive turns. There’s no more overcorrecting. The system does the centering automatically, improving comfort.

The zero-play center position gives immediate feedback. No dead zone. Just direct input and response. This makes a major difference for vehicles with variable payloads or trailers.

Maintenance and Cost Reduction

A key operational advantage: no buffer battery.

The old system required a battery replacement about every three years. With the new setup, that's gone. That reduces long-term maintenance costs and removes roughly 15–20 lbs (6.8–9.1 kg) from the truck, improving fuel economy slightly. Fewer service stops mean fewer disruptions to operations.

How It Works: Electric + Hydraulic Dual Circuit

The Servotwin retains the dual-circuit architecture. One circuit uses hydraulic power, the other electric motor assistance. When the driver turns the wheel, the system calculates optimal torque, adding just enough electric force to smooth the motion.

Benefits include:

  • High torque at low speeds without heavy wheel input
  • Controlled feedback during tight turns
  • More responsive lane changes

This isn't steer-by-wire. It keeps physical steering integrity while introducing smart torque overlay.

Mercedes-Benz Servotwin

Why It Matters for Fleets

Fleet operators care about downtime, safety scores, and total cost of ownership. The new Servotwin hits all three points.

Operational Gains

  • Less driver fatigue means fewer accidents
  • Improved handling makes training easier
  • Lower service costs improve uptime

Driver Retention

Better trucks attract better drivers. Steering assistance, comfort, and customization—these are selling points in a tight labor market. Small improvements in ease-of-use can significantly impact driver retention.

Application Fit: Who Should Use It?

The system is intended for commercial trucks with high front axle loads, such as:

  • Distribution trucks
  • Long-haul semis
  • Special-purpose vocational vehicles
  • Municipal utility trucks

Any truck that operates in mixed environments—urban to highway—will benefit. Particularly in fleets where drivers operate long hours or where space constraints are frequent.

Industry Context: Positioning Against Competitors

This upgrade comes as steering systems become a competitive edge. Volvo’s Dynamic Steering and ZF’s ReAX are known alternatives. However, the Servotwin’s dual-circuit redundancy, center-return assist, and driver-adjustable profiles give Daimler a clear technical edge.

Unlike some rivals, Daimler’s solution remains mechanically linked while offering electric enhancements. That balance may be critical as regulatory bodies continue to scrutinize fully electronic systems.

Mercedes-Benz Servotwin

What’s Next

As autonomous functions continue to evolve, systems like Servotwin are laying the groundwork. The improved steering precision and electronic assist provide hardware readiness for Level 2 and Level 3 automation support.

However, Daimler hasn’t positioned this version for full autonomy. It's for today’s driver, with a nod toward tomorrow.

Bottom Line

The Servotwin steering system delivers measurable improvements in precision, comfort, and service life. It uses a hybrid hydraulic-electric approach to address real-world issues without overengineering the solution.

It’s a smart step forward—not a reinvention. That’s the point. @ truckandbusnews.
