The 2027 BMW iX5 60 xDrive turns the fifth-generation BMW X5 into its first battery-electric luxury SUV. BMW combines X5 practicality with Gen6 eDrive, an 800-volt system and dual-motor xDrive. Spartanburg production begins in August 2026; European deliveries follow in spring 2027.
BMW iX5 Performance and WLTP Efficiency
Looking at the data, BMW iX5 specifications combine pace and distance.
| Specification | BMW iX5 60 xDrive |
|---|---|
| System output | 425 kW / 578 hp |
| Peak torque | 805 Nm |
| 0-100 km/h | 4.6 seconds |
| Top speed | 210 km/h |
| WLTP range | 645-845 km |
| WLTP consumption | 20.1-23.9 kWh/100 km |
| Braked towing capacity | 2,700 kg |
Two motors deliver electric all-wheel drive. Specifically, BMW pairs a rear electrically excited synchronous motor with a front asynchronous unit that disengages at light load, cutting motorway drag before restoring front-axle drive for grip or acceleration. The Heart of Joy controller coordinates propulsion, braking, steering and recuperation in milliseconds.
Gen6 Battery and 800-Volt Charging
In addition, Gen6 gives the iX5 a cell-to-pack battery and high charging power.
| Charging metric | Official figure |
|---|---|
| Usable battery capacity | 141 kWh |
| Maximum DC power | 460 kW |
| DC charge, 10-80 percent | 23 minutes |
| Range added in 10 minutes | Up to 350 km |
| Maximum AC power | 22 kW |
| AC charge, 0-100 percent | 7 hours 30 minutes |
At equal power, 800 volts needs half the current of a 400-volt system, reducing heat and cable load. Consequently, BMW can support higher charging power. Cell-to-pack construction removes modules, while 46-by-120-mm cells carry almost 30 percent more usable energy than BMW's 95-mm cells with identical chemistry.
By comparison, a 150-kW charger delivers less than one-third of the iX5's peak. Actual sessions depend on charger output, battery temperature, preconditioning and state of charge.
Pro-Tip: How Can Drivers Charge Faster?
- Use the car's route planner to select a high-output HPC.
- Precondition the battery before arrival.
- Reach the charger near 10 percent and leave near 80 percent, where charging normally slows, unless the next leg needs extra reserve.
BMW iX5 Dimensions and Practicality
| Measurement | Metric | Imperial |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 4,994 mm | 196.6 in |
| Width | 2,000 mm | 78.7 in |
| Height | 1,742-1,748 mm | 68.6-68.8 in |
| Wheelbase | 3,035 mm | 119.5 in |
| EU kerb weight | 2,890-2,900 kg | 6,371-6,393 lb |
| Payload | 670 kg | 1,477 lb |
| Rear luggage capacity | 650-1,850 litres | 23.0-65.3 cu ft |
| Ground clearance | 199 mm | 7.8 in |
| Turning circle | 12.8 m | 42.0 ft |
The 3,035-mm wheelbase supports five adults, and the rear boot expands to 1,850 litres. In addition, a 53-litre frunk isolates cables from luggage.
Neue Klasse Cabin and Launch Timing
Neue Klasse styling adds an upright Iconic Glow grille, double-X lamps and Winglet door handles. Inside, BMW Panoramic iDrive combines Panoramic Vision, a 17.9-inch display and a 3D head-up display; an optional passenger screen adds entertainment.
From an expert perspective, the 141-kWh battery sets the iX5's tradeoff: long range and 2,700-kg towing against roughly 2,900-kg kerb mass, higher energy demand and heavier tyre loading. BMW has not announced Danish pricing or approach and departure angles; wait for local data before planning off-road use.
