2024 Toyota C-HR: A Funky Hybrid SUV with a Plug-In Option

2024 Toyota C-HR: A Funky Hybrid SUV with a Plug-In Option

The 2024 Toyota C-HR is a small crossover that stands out from the crowd with its quirky design and hybrid powertrain. The first generation was launched in 2016 and became popular with urban drivers who wanted something efficient, fun, and different. Now, Toyota has revealed the second generation of the Toyota C-HR, which aims to build on the strengths of the original while also improving its practicality, technology, and performance.

Design: A Concept Car on the Road

The new 2024 Toyota C-HR has been developed and engineered in Europe, where it will also be manufactured. It adopts a substantially different design without losing the funkiness of its predecessor. It has a "super coupe" profile and gets 20-inch wheels as well as a two-tone paint job. Toyota went the extra mile to reduce the shut lines and better integrate the cameras, sensors, and headlight washers to give the body a smoother look for a cleaner design with improved aerodynamics.

The new Toyota C-HR draws heavily from the radical Toyota C-HR Prologue concept car that was unveiled in December 2022. At the front, it features the new 'face' that will be seen on all future Toyota SUVs. It features distinctive C-shaped LED headlights and is called the Toyota' hammerhead shark' design. The C-HR has a bold front grille, a sporty rear spoiler, and stylish alloy wheels. It has small 18-inch rims that are lightweight. The backside of the rooftop is slanted and gives it an extremely aerodynamic feel. The Toyota C-HR has an adaptive front lighting system. The Toyota SUV has diamond-cut character lines all along its sides that add to the texture. The Toyota C-HR is available in various colors, including white, black, silver, and red. It also has a range of exterior accessories, such as roof rails, body kits, and fog lamps.

In terms of dimensions, the new model is 4360 millimeters (171.6 inches) long, 1830 mm (72 in) wide, and either 1558 mm (61.3 in) or 1564 mm (61.5 in) tall, depending on the version. The wheelbase is 2640 mm (104 in), which is slightly longer than before.

Interior: A High-Tech and High-Quality Cabin

Step inside the cabin, and you'll notice a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster joined by a touchscreen of the same size. The infotainment system offers wireless connections for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring and a navigation system that can automatically reserve some electric charge for use in low-emissions zones. The dashboard features a pleasing mix of dense, soft-touch materials, although some rivals have a more plush finish. Fancier versions also have a head-up display, 64-color ambient lighting, panoramic roofs, and JBL sound system.

Unlike other brands, Toyota is not ready to give up on buttons for often-used functions, even though screens keep getting bigger with each generation of a new car. Red accents and a GR badge belong to a new GR Sport Premiere Edition with sporty touches inside and out.

The new Toyota C-HR also offers more space and comfort than before, thanks to its longer wheelbase and larger rear windows. The boot capacity has increased by 10 liters to 390 liters for the hybrid models and by 20 liters to 370 liters for the plug-in hybrid model. The rear seats can be folded down in a 60:40 split to create more room for luggage.

Powertrain: A Hybrid-Only Range with a Plug-In Option

As expected, the new Toyota C-HR will be available in Europe exclusively with hybrid power. The 1.8-liter unit and the 2.0-liter plug-in hybrid setup come only in front-wheel-drive guise, while the 2.0-liter hybrid can be had with optional all-wheel drive. In terms of power, the base 1.8-liter unit delivers a combined output of 140 hp (103 kW), followed by the 2.0-liter setup with 198 hp (145 kW) and the plug-in hybrid with 223 hp (164 kW).

The plug-in hybrid option is new for the Toyota C-HR and offers 41 miles of electric range thanks to a 13.6 kWh battery. It borrows the 147 hp (108 kW) 2.0-liter petrol engine and the 158 hp (116 kW) electric motor from the latest Prius plug-in hybrid, resulting in a lower benefit-in-kind tax rating, making it a more appealing company car choice. The plug-in hybrid also features different levels of regenerative braking that the driver can adjust to recover energy and extend the range. In its highest setting, this effect is claimed to be strong enough that you can drive the C-HR using only one pedal.

In terms of performance, the entry-level model with the 1.8-liter hybrid powertrain does 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 9.9 seconds and tops out at 106 mph (170 km/h). The front-wheel-drive 2.0-liter model takes 8.1 seconds to complete the sprint or 7.9 seconds if you opt for the all-wheel-drive variant. Both these 2.0-liter hybrid models can do 112 mph (180 km/h). As for the plug-in hybrid, it completes the sprint in 7.4 seconds and can do 112 mph (180 km/h) as well.

Driving: A Fun and Safe Experience

The new Toyota C-HR also promises to deliver a fun driving experience thanks to its new platform that improves rigidity, handling, and comfort. It also comes with various driver assistance systems such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic emergency braking.

The new Toyota C-HR has three driving modes: Eco, Normal, and Sport. The Eco mode optimizes fuel efficiency by reducing throttle response and air conditioning output. The Normal mode provides a balanced performance for everyday driving. The Sport mode enhances acceleration and steering response for a more dynamic feel.

The new C-HR also has a noise-canceling system that reduces unwanted sounds from the engine, road, and wind. The system uses microphones and speakers to generate sound waves that cancel the noise.

Price and Availability: Coming Soon

The new 2024 Toyota C-HR will open for reservations later this year. The first deliveries are expected in early 2024. The new Toyota C-HR will likely cost around $35,000 in regular hybrid guise. The new Toyota C-HR plug-in hybrid is likely to cost around $40,000.

Full details of the new Toyota C-HR range, specifications, and pricing will be confirmed later, says the firm. There will also be two special editions: the GR Sport Premiere Edition with sporty touches inside and out and the High Premiere Edition with high-end features.

The new Toyota C-HR is an attractive option for those who want a funky hybrid SUV with a plug-in option that offers efficiency, practicality, and fun.
