The 2025 Mazda CX-70: A Premium Midsize SUV with Electrified Power

Mazda has unveiled its latest addition to the SUV lineup, the 2025 Mazda CX-70. This midsize crossover is based on the same platform as the larger Mazda CX-90 but offers a more compact and sporty design with two rows of seats. The CX-70 also features three electrified powertrain options, including a plug-in hybrid variant, making it one of the most powerful and efficient models in its class. In this article, we will take a closer look at the pricing, packaging, performance, and features of the 2025 Mazda CX-70 and compare it with some of its main competitors.

Pricing and Packaging

The 2025 Mazda CX-70 will go on sale in the spring of 2024, with prices starting from $41,820. The CX-70 will be available in seven trim levels: Preferred, Premium, Premium Plus, S Preferred, S Premium, S Premium Plus, and Signature. The S trims denote the more powerful version of the 3.3-liter turbocharged inline-six engine, which produces 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. The base engine is a 280-horsepower version of the same unit, while the plug-in hybrid option combines a 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-four with an electric motor for a total output of 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque.

The CX-70 comes standard with all-wheel drive, an eight-speed automatic transmission, 19-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights and taillights, a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 12-speaker Bose sound system, a head-up display, a digital gauge cluster, a panoramic sunroof, a power liftgate, leatherette upholstery, heated front seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, dual-zone automatic climate control, keyless entry and start, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and a rearview camera.

The higher trims add features such as 21-inch alloy wheels, Nappa leather seats, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, a wireless charging pad, a surround-view camera system, a rear-seat entertainment system, a 360-degree monitor, a 17-speaker Bose sound system, a carbon-fiber roof, a rear spoiler, and a blacked-out exterior trim.

Performance and Fuel Economy

The 2025 Mazda CX-70 is designed to deliver a premium driving experience with its electrified powertrains and sophisticated chassis. The CX-70 uses a 48-volt mild-hybrid system to boost the performance and efficiency of the 3.3-liter turbocharged inline-six engine, which is available in two states of tune: 280 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque, or 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. The plug-in hybrid option pairs a 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-four with an electric motor and a 13.8-kWh battery pack, resulting in a combined output of 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. The plug-in hybrid can also travel up to 30 miles on electric power alone and has a total range of 400 miles.

The CX-70 features an eight-speed automatic transmission that sends power to all four wheels via a standard all-wheel-drive system. It also offers different driving modes, including Sport, Off-Road, Towing, and EV, to suit different road conditions and driver preferences. When properly equipped, the CX-70 can tow up to 3,500 pounds.

The fuel economy ratings of the 2025 Mazda CX-70 have not been announced yet, but we expect them to be competitive with other midsize SUVs in the market. The plug-in hybrid option should offer the best efficiency, while the more powerful S trims should sacrifice some mpgs for more performance.

Interior and Technology

The 2025 Mazda CX-70 boasts a spacious, luxurious interior that accommodates five passengers and their cargo. It offers 41.4 inches of legroom in the front row and 39.4 inches in the second row, 39.1 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, and 75.8 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down. The CX-70 also features an underfloor storage compartment in the cargo area for extra convenience.

The CX-70 is equipped with a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and Amazon Alexa integration. The system can be controlled by a rotary knob on the center console or by voice commands. The CX-70 also offers a 12-speaker Bose sound system as standard and a 17-speaker Bose sound system as an option. Other tech features include a head-up display, a digital gauge cluster, a wireless charging pad, a surround-view camera system, a rear-seat entertainment system, and a 360-degree monitor.

The CX-70 also has a comprehensive suite of safety and driver-assist features, such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and a rearview camera. Some available features include a traffic sign recognition system, a driver attention alert system, a rear automatic braking system, and a front and rear parking sensor system.

Exterior and Design

The 2025 Mazda CX-70 showcases a sleek and sporty design that reflects the brand’s Kodo philosophy of “Soul of Motion”. The CX-70 features a large grille with a chrome surround, slim LED headlights and taillights, a sculpted hood, a sloping roofline, a dual exhaust system, and a rear spoiler. The CX-70 also offers different exterior color options, such as Soul Red Crystal, Machine Gray, Snowflake White Pearl, Sonic Silver, Jet Black, Deep Crystal Blue, and Polymetal Gray.

The CX-70 rides on 19-inch or 21-inch alloy wheels, depending on the trim level, and has a ground clearance of 8.0 inches or 8.1 inches, respectively. The CX-70 has a wheelbase of 122.8 inches, a length of 200.8 inches, a width of 78.5 inches, and a height of 68.2 inches. The CX-70 also features a carbon-fiber roof and a blacked-out exterior trim on some of the higher trims.

Comparison with Competitors

The 2025 Mazda CX-70 faces a tough competition in the midsize SUV segment, where it competes with models such as the Jeep Grand Cherokee, the Honda Passport, the Lincoln Nautilus, the BMW X3, and the Volvo XC60. Here is a comparison table that shows how the CX-70 stacks up against some of its rivals:

ModelBase PriceEngineHorsepowerTorqueFuel EconomyCargo Space
Mazda CX-70$41,8203.3L I-6 turbo280 hp332 lb-ftN/A39.1 / 75.8 cu ft
Jeep Grand Cherokee$37,7653.6L V-6293 hp260 lb-ft18/25 mpg36.3 / 68.3 cu ft
Honda Passport$33,7103.5L V-6280 hp262 lb-ft20/25 mpg41.2 / 77.9 cu ft
Lincoln Nautilus$42,5002.0L I-4 turbo250 hp280 lb-ft21/26 mpg37.2 / 68.8 cu ft
BMW X3$43,7002.0L I-4 turbo248 hp258 lb-ft25/29 mpg28.7 / 62.7 cu ft
Volvo XC60$42,4502.0L I-4 turbo250 hp258 lb-ft22/29 mpg29.7 / 63.3 cu ft

As the table shows, the CX-70 offers more horsepower and torque than most of its competitors, except for the Jeep Grand Cherokee, which has a slightly higher output from its V-6 engine. The CX-70 also offers more cargo space than most of its rivals, except for the Honda Passport, which has a larger interior volume. The CX-70’s fuel economy ratings are not available yet, but we expect them to be competitive with other midsize SUVs in the market. The CX-70 also offers a plug-in hybrid option, which none of its competitors do, except for the Volvo XC60, which has a similar powertrain.

The CX-70 also stands out with its premium and sporty design, which gives it a distinctive look and feel. The CX-70 also features a high level of standard and available equipment, such as a panoramic sunroof, a head-up display, a surround-view camera system, and a rear-seat entertainment system.
