Lancia has a long history of making elegant and luxurious cars for the Italian elite, but its latest model is also a showcase of electric vehicle technology. The Lancia Flaminia Presidenziale, a one-off EV conversion of a classic 1960s sedan, was used by President Sergio Mattarella to celebrate the Festa della Repubblica on June 2, 2023.
The Festa della Repubblica is the national day of Italy, commemorating the referendum in 1946 that abolished the monarchy and established a republic. It is a day of patriotic pride and celebration, with parades, ceremonies, and fireworks across the country.
One of the highlights of the festivities is the passaggio della Colonna della Libertà, or the passage of the Column of Freedom, a convoy of historic and modern vehicles that carries the president and other dignitaries along the streets of Rome. The convoy starts from the Quirinal Palace, the official residence of the president, and ends at the Altare della Patria, a monumental complex dedicated to the first king of Italy and the unknown soldier.
This year, for the first time, the president rode in an electric car: the Lancia Flaminia Presidenziale. This unique vehicle is based on one of four original Lancia Flaminia sedans that were specially built for state occasions in 1960. The Flaminia was Lancia's flagship model at the time, featuring a sophisticated V6 engine, independent suspension, and elegant styling by Pininfarina.
The Lancia Flaminia Presidenziale was restored and converted to electric power by Stellantis, the parent company of Lancia, and other brands such as Fiat, Peugeot, and Jeep. The project was part of Stellantis' e-Legend initiative, which aims to preserve and modernize classic cars from its portfolio.
