The 2024 Lancia Ypsilon Review: A Tribute to the Past and a Vision for the Future

2024 Lancia Ypsilon Review

The Lancia Ypsilon is back with a new look, technology, and ambition. The Italian brand, part of the Stellantis group, has unveiled its first new model in 13 years, marking the start of a multi-year relaunch plan that will expand beyond its home market.

The new Ypsilon is a compact hatchback that combines style, luxury, and innovation. It is Lancia's first-ever electric vehicle, although it will also offer mild-hybrid versions with gasoline engines. The car is based on the same platform as the Peugeot 208 and the Opel Corsa, but it has a distinctive design that draws inspiration from the brand's heritage and future.

A tribute to the past and a vision for the future

The exterior of the new Ypsilon is a radical departure from the previous generation, a city car with a curvy shape. The new model is larger, lower, and sportier, with sharp lines and geometric elements. It measures 4.08 meters in length, 1.76 meters in width, and 1.44 meters in height, with a wheelbase of 2.54 meters.

The front end: a cocktail glass and a Y-shape

The front end features an LED light signature resembling a cocktail glass, symbolizing elegance and sophistication. The brand name has replaced the traditional Lancia grille in laser-cut letters on the hood. The headlights and the daytime running lights have a Y-shaped motif, referencing the model's name and the brand's logo.

The rear end: a homage to the Stratos

The rear end pays homage to the legendary Stratos, one of history's most successful rally cars. The circular taillights are a clear nod to the Stratos and other iconic models like the Fulvia and the Beta. The upper part of the tailgate and the roof are finished in glossy black, contrasting with the body color. The Lancia shield is now located on the rear pillars, while the Ypsilon badge is placed on the lower left corner of the tailgate.

The side profile: muscular and chrome

Muscular wheel arches, hidden rear door handles, and chrome accents characterize the side profile. The car rides on 17-inch alloy wheels with a diamond-cut design. The body color palette includes eight options, ranging from classic shades like blue and white to more vibrant ones like red and yellow.

A cozy and modern interior

The interior of the new Ypsilon is a blend of comfort, quality, and technology. The dashboard has a geometric shape that creates a sense of space and lightness. The instrument cluster and the infotainment system are digital and measure 10.25 inches each. The steering wheel and the gear lever have leather wrapping, while the seats and the door panels are upholstered in fabric.

Features and functions for a better driving experience

The car offers a range of features and functions to enhance the driving experience and the safety of the occupants. Some of these include:

  • Wireless charging pad and three USB-C ports for smartphones and other devices
  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration for seamless connectivity and entertainment
  • Bose sound system with eight speakers and a subwoofer for high-quality audio
  • Ambient lighting with seven colors to choose from and adjust the mood of the cabin
  • Air conditioning with a special filter that eliminates 99% of harmful particles and bacteria
  • Adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go function for smooth and safe driving
  • Lane-keeping assistance and traffic sign recognition for enhanced awareness and assistance
  • Rearview camera and parking sensors for easier maneuvering and parking

Luggage capacity and seat configuration

The car also boasts a generous luggage capacity of 310-340 liters, depending on the version. The rear seats can be folded to create more space if needed.

A limited edition with a touch of luxury

The new Lancia Ypsilon debuts with a limited edition created in collaboration with Cassina, a renowned Italian furniture manufacturer. The Lancia Ypsilon Cassina is a 100% electric version available in 1,906 numbered and certified units, a tribute to the year of foundation of both Lancia and Cassina.

Exclusive design and refined materials

Its exclusive design and refined materials distinguish the Ypsilon Cassina. The exterior is painted deep blue, while the interior features wooden inserts and leather details. The seats are covered in a soft and durable fabric, while the dashboard has a textured finish. The car also has a metal plaque with the serial number and the signatures of the two brands.

Price and availability

The 2024 Lancia Ypsilon Cassina costs €39,500 ($44,800), making it the most expensive and prestigious version of the new Ypsilon. It can be ordered in Italy today, February 14, 2024, and delivered in May. The car comes with a three-year warranty and a complimentary subscription to the My Lancia app, which allows the owner to access various services and information about the vehicle.

A range of powertrains for different needs

The 2024 Lancia Ypsilon is a stylish and luxurious car and an efficient and environmentally friendly one. It offers a choice of three powertrains, each with its characteristics and benefits.

Electric: the most innovative and sustainable option

The electric version is the most innovative and sustainable option. It is powered by a front-mounted motor that delivers 154 horsepower and 260 Newton meters (191 pound-feet) of torque. It uses a 51-kWh battery pack that provides a range of up to 250 miles (403 kilometers) in the WLTP combined cycle. The battery can be recharged in various ways, depending on the available infrastructure and time. The car supports fast charging up to 100 kW, which allows it to regain 80% of its charge in 30 minutes. It also supports normal charging up to 11 kW, which takes five hours to charge the battery fully. Alternatively, it can be plugged into a domestic socket or a wall box, which takes 15 and seven hours to complete the charging process.

Mild-hybrid: the most versatile and affordable option

The mild-hybrid versions are the most versatile and affordable options. They combine a 1.2-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine with a 12-volt electric system that provides additional power and reduces fuel consumption and emissions. The engine produces 83 horsepower and 118 Newton-meters (87 pound-feet) of torque and is paired with a five-speed manual transmission. The electric system comprises a belt-driven starter generator and a lithium-ion battery integrated into the engine compartment. The system recovers energy during braking and deceleration and reuses it to assist the engine during acceleration and start-stop phases. The system also allows the engine to switch off when the car is coasting or stationary and to restart smoothly and quietly when needed.

Natural gas/petrol: the most eco-friendly and economical option

The natural gas/petrol version is the most eco-friendly and economical option. It uses a 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine that can run on natural gas and petrol. The engine has 70 horsepower, 104 Newton meters (77 pounds) of torque, and a five-speed manual transmission. The car has two fuel tanks: one for natural gas with a capacity of 13 kilograms and one for petrol with a capacity of 40 liters. The vehicle can switch between the two fuels automatically or manually, depending on the driver's availability and preference. The natural gas/petrol version has a combined range of 620 miles (998 kilometers) and emits 25% less CO2 than the petrol-only version.
