The 2023 BMW M2: A South African Sensation

The 2023 BMW M2: A South African Sensation

The BMW M2 is one of the most popular and acclaimed sports cars in the world, but it has a special appeal in South Africa, where it has been a best-seller since its launch in 2016. The German automaker has revealed the new 2023 BMW M2, which promises to be even more powerful, agile, and distinctive than its predecessor. The new model will arrive in South Africa in the second quarter of 2023, with a starting price of R1 503 975, which is equivalent to about $100,000.

What's new with the 2023 BMW M2?

The 2023 BMW M2 is based on the new 2 Series Coupe, which means it shares the same platform as the 3 Series. This results in a larger and more spacious car than the previous generation, but also a heavier one. The new BMW M2 is 119 mm longer, 16 mm wider, and 11 mm lower than the outgoing model and weighs between 1 730 kg and 1 754 kg, depending on the transmission.

The design of the new M2 is also more aggressive and distinctive, featuring a large kidney grille that dominates the front fascia, a carbon fiber roof that lowers the center of gravity, and a staggered wheel setup with 19-inch rims at the front and 20-inch rims at the rear. The rear end also boasts a quad exhaust system, a diffuser, and a spoiler that enhances the aerodynamics and performance of the car.

The interior of the new M2 is equally sporty and luxurious, with two options for seats: standard M Sport seats or optional M Carbon bucket seats that are lighter and more supportive. The dashboard features a digital instrument cluster with a 12.3-inch display and a central touchscreen with a 14.9-inch display that runs the latest iDrive 8 system. The system offers various features such as wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, cloud-based navigation, voice and gesture control, and over-the-air updates.

What's under the hood of the 2023 BMW M2?

The most exciting part of the new BMW M2 is its engine: a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six that produces 338 kW (453 hp) and 550 Nm (406 lb-ft) of torque. This is the same engine that powers the M3 and M4, but slightly detuned for the smaller car. However, it still offers a significant increase over the previous M2, which had 302 kW (405 hp) and 550 Nm (406 lb-ft) of torque.

The engine can be paired with either a six-speed manual gearbox or an eight-speed automatic gearbox, both sending power to the rear wheels only. The manual gearbox features rev-matching technology that automatically blips the throttle on downshifts, while the automatic gearbox offers three different modes: Efficient, Sport, and Sport Plus.

The performance figures of the new BMW M2 are impressive: it can sprint from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 4.1 seconds with the automatic gearbox or 4.3 seconds with the manual gearbox. The top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h (155 mph) but can be increased to 285 km/h (177 mph) with the optional M Driver's Package.

How does the 2023 BMW M2 handle?

The new M2 is not only fast in a straight line but also agile and responsive in corners. The car features various technologies that enhance its handling and stability, such as an Active M Differential that distributes torque between the rear wheels depending on the driving situation, an Adaptive M Suspension that adjusts the damping force according to the road conditions and driving modes, and an M Servotronic steering system that offers two settings: Comfort and Sport.

The car also features an M Dynamic Mode that allows for more wheel slip and controlled drifts, as well as an M Traction Control system that offers ten settings for different levels of intervention. For those who want to measure their driving skills, a Drift Analyzer feature records and evaluates the duration, distance, and angle of drifts.

The braking system of the new M2 is also upgraded, featuring larger discs and calipers than before. The driver can also choose between Comfort and Sport brake pedal feel settings. The brake calipers are painted in blue as standard but can be optionally finished in red or black.

Why is the BMW M2 so popular in South Africa?

The new BMW M2 is expected to be a hit in South Africa, where it has a loyal fan base and a strong reputation. According to BMW South Africa, the country is one of the top five markets for the M2 globally and has sold over 1,500 units since its introduction in 2016.

One of the reasons for the M2's popularity in South Africa is its affordability compared to other M models, such as the BMW M3 and M4, which cost over R2 million ($133,000). The M2 offers a similar level of performance and driving pleasure but at a more accessible price point.

Another reason is the availability of the manual gearbox, which is rare in modern sports cars and appeals to purists and enthusiasts who prefer a more engaging and interactive driving experience. The manual gearbox also gives the M2 a unique selling point over its rivals, such as the Audi RS3 and the Mercedes-AMG A45 S, which only offer automatic transmissions.

Finally, the M2 is popular in South Africa because of its versatility and practicality. Depending on the mood and occasion, it can be used as a daily driver, a weekend toy, or a track weapon. It can also accommodate four passengers and some luggage, making it more suitable for family and friends than a two-seater sports car.

Conclusion

The 2023 BMW M2 is a remarkable car that combines power, agility, and style in a compact and attractive package. It is the ultimate expression of BMW's motto: "The Ultimate Driving Machine". It is also a car with a special connection with South Africa, which enjoys high demand and a loyal following. The new model will continue this success story and delight its fans with its enhanced performance, features, and design. The new BMW M2 is a South African sensation that deserves to be celebrated.
