Opel, the German carmaker that is part of Stellantis, has announced a deal with PostNord, the Swedish postal service, to deliver 400 electric cars by spring 2024. This is a remarkable achievement for Opel, as it will be the first time a major commercial vehicle fleet will be powered by electric vehicles in Sweden.
Why PostNord chose Opel
PostNord has been looking for a reliable and efficient partner to provide electric vehicles for its mail delivery operations. The company has been testing different models and technologies for several years and has decided to go with Opel because of its proven track record of delivering high-quality vehicles that meet the highest safety, performance, and sustainability standards.
Opel has been a pioneer in electric mobility since 2010 when it launched the first mass-produced electric car in Europe: the Ampera. Since then, Opel has expanded its portfolio of electric vehicles to include sedans, hatchbacks, SUVs, and vans. In 2020, Opel sold over 100,000 electric vehicles worldwide, making it one of the leading players in the fast-growing market.
Opel’s electric vehicles have advanced features such as regenerative braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, blind spot detection, and wireless charging. They also have a range of up to 400 kilometers (249 miles) on a single charge, which is enough to cover most of PostNord’s routes across Sweden.
How PostNord will use Opel’s electric vehicles
PostNord will use Opel’s electric vehicles for its mail delivery service in Sweden. The company will operate around 400 Opel Combo electric vans to transport letters and parcels from post offices to customers’ homes and businesses. The Opel Combo electric vans will have a capacity of up to 300 kilograms (660 pounds) each, enough to deliver about 10 tons of mail daily.
The vans will also have a distinctive design that reflects PostNord’s brand identity. They will feature bright colors such as yellow and blue and logos and slogans that promote environmental awareness and social responsibility. The vans will also have solar panels on their roofs to generate extra energy during peak hours.
The use of electric vehicles by PostNord will have several benefits for both the company and society. For PostNord, it will reduce fuel costs by up to 50%, lower maintenance expenses by up to 30%, and improve customer satisfaction by offering faster and more reliable delivery services. For society, it will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80%, lower noise pollution by up to 90%, and create new jobs in the green economy.
What this means for Opel
The deal between Opel and PostNord is not only a milestone for both companies but also for the whole automotive industry. It shows that electric mobility is becoming mainstream and viable for commercial applications. It also demonstrates that Opel is not only making cars but also making history with its innovative solutions.
Opel’s CEO Michael Lohscheller said: “We are proud to partner with PostNord in this historic project. This is a great example of how we can combine our expertise in electrification with our passion for customer satisfaction. We believe our electric vehicles are good for business, people, and the planet.”
PostNord’s CEO Lars Larsson said: “We are very excited about this partnership with Opel. We have chosen them because they share our vision of creating a greener future through sustainable mobility solutions. We are confident that their electric vehicles will meet our high quality, performance, and efficiency expectations.”
The deal between Opel and PostNord is expected to be finalized by mid-2023 after obtaining all necessary approvals from authorities. The first deliveries of the electric vans are planned for spring 2024.
