The Mercedes-Benz eSprinter: A Sophisticated Electric Van from $71,000

The Mercedes-Benz eSprinter: A Stylish and Sophisticated Electric Van from $71,000

Mercedes-Benz has launched the new eSprinter, a fully electric version of its popular Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van. The Mercedes-Benz eSprinter promises to combine the versatility, reliability, and comfort of the Sprinter with the benefits of zero-emission driving. But how does it compare with other electric vans on the market? And is it worth the premium price tag? Here’s what you need to know about the eSprinter.

What is the eSprinter?

The eSprinter is the electric variant of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, a large van that has been in production since 1995. The Sprinter is known for its spacious cargo area, high payload capacity, and wide range of configurations. The eSprinter aims to offer the same features but with an electric powertrain that eliminates tailpipe emissions and reduces operating costs.

The Mercedes-Benz eSprinter is available in two body lengths (standard and long) and two roof heights (standard and high). It has a maximum load volume of 11 cubic meters and a maximum payload of 1,045 kg. It comes with a 55 kWh battery pack that provides a range of up to 53 miles (85 km) on a single charge, according to the WLTP cycle. The battery can be recharged from 10% to 80% in about 25 minutes using a 110 kW DC fast charger.

The Mercedes-Benz eSprinter has a 114-hp electric motor that delivers 295 Nm of torque. It has a top speed of 75 mph (120 km/h) and can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 14 seconds. The eSprinter also features regenerative braking, which recovers energy when the driver lifts off the accelerator or brakes and feeds it back to the battery.

The eSprinter is equipped with a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also has a digital instrument cluster that displays speed, battery level, range, and driving mode information. The eSprinter offers three driving modes: ECO, Comfort, and Sport. ECO mode optimizes energy consumption and limits the top speed and acceleration. Comfort mode provides a balanced performance and driving feel. Sport mode increases the responsiveness and power output of the motor.

The eSprinter also comes with a range of safety and assistance systems, such as Active Brake Assist, Blind Spot Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, Crosswind Assist, Attention Assist and Traffic Sign Assist. It also has a rear-view camera, parking sensors, LED headlights and taillights, and a heated windshield.

The eSprinter is priced from $71,886 in the US, and from €53,990 in Germany. It is eligible for various incentives and tax benefits, depending on the market. The eSprinter also comes with a four-year or 100,000-mile warranty and a free maintenance package for the first four services.

How does the eSprinter compare with other electric vans?

The Mercedes-Benz eSprinter is not the only electric van on the market. There are several competitors that offer similar or better performance, range and features. Here are some of the main rivals of the eSprinter:

  • Ford E-Transit: The E-Transit is the electric version of the Ford Transit, one of the best-selling vans in the world. The E-Transit has a 67 kWh battery that delivers a range of up to 217 miles (350 km) on a single charge. It has a 198 hp electric motor that produces 430 Nm of torque. It has a maximum load volume of 15.1 cubic meters and a maximum payload of 1,616 kg. It comes with a 12-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a wireless smartphone charger, a 4G Wi-Fi hotspot, and a host of safety and connectivity features. The Ford E-Transit is priced at $52,690 in the US and £42,695 in the UK.
  • Volkswagen ID. Buzz Cargo: The ID. Buzz Cargo is the electric version of the Volkswagen Transporter, a van that traces its roots back to the iconic VW Bus. The ID. Buzz Cargo is based on the ID. Buzz concept, a futuristic-looking vehicle that pays homage to the original Bus. The ID. Buzz Cargo has a 111 kWh battery that provides a range of up to 258 miles (415 km) on a single charge. It has a 201 hp electric motor that generates 310 Nm of torque. It has a maximum load volume of 6.6 cubic meters and a maximum payload of 800 kg. It features a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a head-up display, a voice assistant, and a suite of intelligent driver assistance systems. The Volkswagen ID. Buzz Cargo is expected to go on sale in 2024, with a price tag of around $60,000 in the US, and around €50,000 in Europe.
  • Renault Kangoo E-Tech: The Kangoo E-Tech is the electric version of the Renault Kangoo, a small van that has been on the market since 1997. The Kangoo E-Tech has a 44 kWh battery that gives a range of up to 186 miles (300 km) on a single charge. It has a 75 hp electric motor that delivers 245 Nm of torque. It has a maximum load volume of 3.9 cubic meters and a maximum payload of 650 kg. It comes with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a wireless smartphone charger, a digital instrument cluster, and a range of safety and convenience features. The Renault Kangoo E-Tech is priced from $39,600 in the US, and from €29,900 in France.

The table below summarizes the key specifications and prices of the eSprinter and its competitors:

Renault Kangoo E-Tech44 kWh186 miles (300 km)Electric75 hp245 Nm3.9 cubic meters650 kg$39,600

As you can see, the Mercedes-Benz eSprinter is not the best performer in terms of range, power, torque, load volume or payload. It is also the most expensive of the bunch. However, it does offer a premium brand image, a refined driving experience, a high level of comfort and technology, and a comprehensive warranty and maintenance package. The eSprinter may not be the most practical or economical choice, but it is a stylish and sophisticated one.
