The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) recently released its updated moderate overlap frontal crash test results, and the 2024 Mazda CX-5 emerged as a champion. This popular compact SUV earned the prestigious Top Safety Pick+ designation, solidifying its place as a leader in its class for occupant protection.
A Commitment to Continuous Improvement
The IIHS's moderate overlap test simulates a head-on collision where 40% of the driver's side front end collides with a stationary barrier at 40 mph. This rigorous test reflects real-world crashes and assesses a vehicle's ability to safeguard occupants. The IIHS added a second dummy in the rear seat in 2022 to evaluate rear passenger safety.
In the initial iteration of this test, the 2021-2022 Mazda CX-5, along with many other vehicles, received a lower rating. However, Mazda's dedication to safety shone through. They promptly addressed the feedback and incorporated improvements based on the IIHS's data-driven recommendations.
This commitment materialized in the form of rear seatbelt pre-tensioners and load limiters, which are now standard equipment on all new Mazda vehicles.
