Nissan X-Trail Mountain Rescue: The ultimate ski patrol vehicle
Nissan is bringing the all-wheel drive strengths of its unique e-4ORCE technology to European ski slopes this winter with the creation of an X-Trail e-4ORCE extensively modified for mountain rescue needs. The Nissan X-Trail Mountain Rescue concept is a one-off vehicle that showcases the capabilities of the e-4ORCE system, which delivers instant torque to all four wheels for enhanced traction, stability, and control on any terrain.
The concept also features a range of custom equipment and accessories to assist the ski patrol team in their missions, such as:
- A snowplow attachment to clear the way for other vehicles and skiers
- A roof rack with a ski carrier, a snowboard carrier, a stretcher, and a first aid kit
- A winch mounted on the front bumper to pull out stuck vehicles or objects
- A light bar and a siren on the roof to alert other road users and skiers of the emergency situation
- A two-way radio and a GPS system inside the cabin to communicate with the base station and navigate the slopes
- A heated steering wheel, heated seats, and climate control to keep the driver and passengers warm and comfortable
- A rearview camera and a 360-degree camera provide a clear view of the surroundings and avoid obstacles
- A snow mode and a hill descent control to optimize driving performance and safety on slippery and steep surfaces
How e-4ORCE works
The e-4ORCE technology is based on Nissan’s experience in developing electric vehicles and performance cars. It uses two electric motors on each axle to deliver power to all four wheels. The system also employs a series of sensors and controllers to monitor the road conditions, the driver’s inputs, and the vehicle’s behavior, and adjust the torque distribution accordingly.
The result is a smooth, responsive driving experience that enhances the driver’s confidence and comfort. The e-4ORCE system also reduces the vehicle’s body roll and pitch, making the ride more stable and enjoyable for the passengers.
The e-4ORCE technology is currently available on the Nissan Ariya, the brand’s first all-electric crossover. It will be offered on the next-generation Nissan X-Trail, which is expected to debut in 2024.
Why e-4ORCE is ideal for mountain rescue
The e-4ORCE technology is not only suitable for everyday driving, but also for extreme situations, such as mountain rescue. The system provides several advantages for the ski patrol team, such as:
- Instant torque: The electric motors deliver instant and powerful torque to all four wheels, allowing the vehicle to accelerate quickly and overcome obstacles, such as snow, ice, and rocks.
- Precise control: The system can precisely control the amount and the direction of the torque to each wheel, enabling the vehicle to maneuver smoothly and accurately around corners, curves, and narrow paths.
- Brake regeneration: The system can recover energy from braking and store it in the battery, extending the driving range and reducing brake wear and tear.
- Zero emissions: The system does not produce any tailpipe emissions, making the vehicle eco-friendly and compliant with the environmental regulations in the ski resorts.
