Stellantis and Ample Team Up to Bring Battery Swapping to Electric Vehicles

Battery swapping is a technology that allows electric vehicle (EV) drivers to replace their depleted batteries with fully charged ones in a matter of minutes instead of waiting for hours to recharge them. This could potentially solve some of the challenges that EVs face, such as range anxiety, long charging times, and high upfront costs. However, battery swapping has not been widely adopted in the EV market, mainly due to the battery systems' lack of standardization, compatibility, and scalability.

That could change soon, as Stellantis, the world’s fourth-largest automaker, and Ample, a San Francisco-based startup, have announced a partnership to leverage Ample’s modular battery-swapping technology for use in Stellantis EVs. The partnership aims to provide a fast, convenient, and affordable way to deliver energy to EVs while also reducing the environmental impact of transportation.

How Ample’s Modular Battery Swapping Technology Works

Ample’s technology is based on a modular battery architecture, which means that each EV battery is composed of multiple smaller battery modules that can be easily swapped in and out of the vehicle. The modules are designed to be compatible with any EV model without requiring any modifications to the vehicle. The modules can also be upgraded over time as battery technology improves.

Ample operates a network of automated battery swapping stations, which can deliver a full charge to any EV in under 10 minutes. The stations are compact, lightweight, and easy to install, requiring only two parking spaces and a standard electrical connection. The stations use computer vision and wireless communication to identify the location and configuration of the battery modules in each vehicle and then swap them with fully charged ones. The depleted modules are then placed on shelves to be recharged and balanced, using renewable energy sources whenever possible.

Ample claims that its battery swapping solution is faster, cheaper, and more convenient than conventional charging, as well as more sustainable and scalable. The company says that its stations are 3-10 times cheaper to build and install than fast-charging stations, and its energy delivery is 10-20% cheaper than gas. The company also says that its solution can help reduce the demand for raw materials, the waste of batteries, and the strain on the electrical grid.

Stellantis and Ample’s Partnership and Plans

Stellantis and Ample have established a partnership to integrate Ample’s modular battery swapping technology into Stellantis EVs, starting with the Fiat 500e. The partnership will initially focus on the Free2Move car-sharing service, which operates a fleet of 100 Fiat 500e vehicles in Washington, DC. The electric cars will be equipped with Ample’s battery modules and can access Ample’s swapping stations in the city. The partnership will allow Free2Move customers to enjoy the benefits of battery swapping, such as faster and easier charging, longer range, and lower costs.

The partnership will also explore the potential of expanding the battery swapping solution to other Stellantis EV models and markets, as well as other use cases, such as ride-hailing, last-mile delivery, and fleet management. The partnership will leverage Stellantis’ global presence and expertise in the automotive industry, as well as Ample’s innovative and flexible technology and business model.
