Mercedes-Benz has a long tradition of making elegant and spacious wagons, but the new E-Class All-Terrain takes the concept to a new level of versatility and luxury. This is a wagon that can handle rough roads and challenging terrains thanks to its raised suspension, all-wheel drive, and off-road driving mode. It's also a wagon that offers a luxurious, high-tech cabin with plenty of room for passengers and cargo. The E-Class All-Terrain is a unique vehicle that combines the best of both worlds: comfort and capability.
The Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain is based on the regular E-Class Estate but with some distinctive features that set it apart. It has a special grille, bumpers, and wheel arches that give it a rugged look. It also has an air suspension system that can adjust the ride height by up to 46 mm, depending on the driving situation. In All-Terrain mode, the suspension raises the car by 20 mm, while Rocking mode raises it by another 15 mm. This allows the E-Class All-Terrain to have a ground clearance of up to 156 mm, which is significantly higher than the standard Estate’s 160 mm.
The Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain also benefits from the 4MATIC all-wheel drive system, which distributes the power between the front and rear axles according to the road conditions. The system works in conjunction with the electronic stability program (ESP), the anti-lock braking system (ABS), and the traction control system (ASR) to provide optimal grip and control. The E-Class All-Terrain also has a downhill speed regulation (DSR) feature, which helps the driver maintain a steady speed when descending steep slopes.
The Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain is powered by a 3.0-liter inline-six engine that produces 362 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. The engine is assisted by a 48-volt mild-hybrid system that adds an extra boost of 21 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque when needed. The engine is paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission that offers smooth and responsive shifts. The E-Class All-Terrain can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds and reach a top speed of 130 mph.
The E-Class All-Terrain is not only capable but also comfortable and refined. The interior is similar to the regular E-Class Estate but with some exclusive touches, such as stainless steel pedals, floor mats with All-Terrain lettering, and aluminum trim elements. The cabin is spacious and versatile, with seating for up to seven people (including two rear-facing seats in the cargo area) and a maximum cargo capacity of 64 cubic feet. The cabin is also equipped with a host of advanced features, such as a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience), wireless smartphone charging, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, navigation, a Burmester surround sound system, a panoramic sunroof, heated and ventilated front seats, massaging front seats, leather upholstery, ambient lighting, and more.
The Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain also offers a high level of safety and driver assistance features, such as adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, blind spot assist, rear cross-traffic alert, active park assist, surround view camera system with transparent hood feature (which shows a virtual view of the road beneath the vehicle), head-up display, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, traffic sign recognition, active brake assist with cross-traffic function (which can brake for crossing traffic at intersections), evasive steering assist (which can help avoid collisions by steering around obstacles), Car-to-X communication (which can exchange information with other vehicles and infrastructure), and more.
The Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain is expected to go on sale in the US in early 2024, with a starting price of around $71,250. It will compete with other luxury wagons with off-road capabilities, such as the Audi A6 Allroad and the Volvo V90 Cross Country. The E-Class All-Terrain is a niche product that appeals to a select group of buyers who want a wagon that can do it all: carry people and cargo in comfort and style while also being able to tackle rough roads and challenging terrains. The E-Class All-Terrain is a testament to Mercedes-Benz’s engineering prowess and innovation spirit. It’s a wagon for the adventurous. @via Mercedes-Benz.
