BMW iX1: The Electric SUV That Outshines Its Gas-Powered Sibling

BMW iX1 electric SUV

The BMW X1 is a popular choice among compact SUV buyers, offering a spacious cabin, a premium interior, and a sporty driving experience. But what if you want to ditch the gas pump and go electric? Enter the BMW iX1, the fully electric version of the X1 that promises to deliver even more performance, efficiency, and style.

The iX1 is part of BMW's strategy to offer all of its new models with a range of powertrain options, including petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid, and pure electric. The iX1 joins the likes of the BMW iX3, BMW i4, and BMW i7 as an EV variant of an existing model. But unlike some of its siblings, the iX1 is not just a badge swap. It features many design and technical changes that make it stand out from the crowd.

Power and Range

The iX1 is powered by BMW's fifth-generation eDrive technology, which consists of two electric motors, one on each axle, that provide all-wheel drive. The system's combined output is 313 horsepower and 364 pound-feet of torque, making the iX1 one of the most powerful members of the third-generation X1 family.

The iX1 can sprint from 0 to 62 mph in just 5.7 seconds (in Boost mode, activated via the left steering wheel paddle), matching the xDrive30e, the most potent plug-in hybrid in the lineup. The top speed is limited to 112 mph, which is more than enough for most drivers.

The iX1 draws its energy from a 64.7 kWh battery pack mounted under the floor, which provides up to 270 miles of range on a single charge (according to the WLTP cycle). That's more than enough for most daily commutes and weekend trips. And if you need to recharge on the go, you can do so at speeds of up to 130 kW, meaning a 10 to 80 percent top-up takes just 29 minutes. The battery also features a smart thermal management system that preconditions it to an optimal temperature when approaching a fast charger programmed into the navigation system.

Design and Technology

The iX1 may share its basic shape with the X1, but it has a number of distinctive features that set it apart as an electric model. The most noticeable difference is the closed-off kidney grille, which improves aerodynamics and houses various sensors. The front bumper also has larger air intakes and blue accents that hint at its electric nature.

The side profile reveals another clue: the lack of exhaust pipes. Instead, the rear bumper has a diffuser that helps reduce drag. The iX1 also gets unique alloy wheels that are designed to optimize airflow and reduce weight. The overall result is a drag coefficient of 0.26, which is impressive for an SUV.

The interior of the iX1 is similar to that of the X1 but with some upgrades and tweaks. The iX1 gets a 10.3-inch digital instrument display as standard, plus a 10.7-inch curved touchscreen, both running the new BMW Operating System 8. This system offers a more intuitive and customizable user interface, as well as enhanced connectivity and voice control features.

The iX1 also gets some exclusive options, such as an open-pore wood trim and leather-free upholstery made from recycled materials. The cabin feels well-finished and impressively spacious for a car that is just over 177 inches long. Full-size adults will be able to sit front and rear without complaint, and there is a roomy 24 cubic feet of cargo space.

Driving Impressions

The iX1 may be an electric SUV but it still drives like a BMW. That means it offers a sporty, engaging driving experience that will please enthusiasts and casual drivers alike. The steering is precise and responsive if a little light for our liking. The suspension is firm but well-controlled, absorbing bumps without disturbing the cabin. And thanks to the low center of gravity and the balanced weight distribution, body roll is kept to a minimum in corners.

The iX1 also offers different driving modes that alter the power delivery, the steering weight, and the suspension settings. There is a Comfort mode for everyday driving, a Sport mode for more spirited driving, and an Eco Pro mode for maximizing efficiency. The iX1 also features a variable regenerative braking system that can be adjusted via the right steering wheel paddle. The driver can choose between a high level of regeneration that allows for one-pedal driving, a low level that mimics coasting, or an adaptive level that adjusts to the traffic and road conditions.

The iX1 is not only fun to drive but also quiet and comfortable. The cabin is well insulated from wind and road noise, and the electric motors are barely audible. The seats are supportive and cozy, and the climate control system is effective and easy to use. The iX1 also comes with a host of safety and driver assistance features, such as adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, blind spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, and more.

Verdict

The BMW iX1 is a great addition to the compact SUV segment, offering a compelling alternative to the conventional X1 and its rivals. It combines the practicality, quality, and style of the X1 with an electric vehicle's performance, efficiency, and innovation. It is fast, fun, spacious, and smart. And it shows that BMW is serious about electrification and sustainability.

The iX1 is currently available in Europe, but there are no plans to bring it to the US market. That's a shame because we think it would appeal to many American buyers who are looking for a small but capable electric SUV. Hopefully, BMW will reconsider its decision and give us a chance to enjoy the iX1 on our roads. Until then, we can only admire it from afar.
