Electric SUV Built for Real Adventure
At the 2025 SEMA Show, Hyundai revealed its IONIQ 9 Off-Road SUV Concept, created with Jeremiah Burton and Zach Jobe of BigTime. The goal: prove that electric vehicles can deliver both performance and off-road toughness.
The IONIQ 9 BigTime Concept debuts in SEMA’s Future Tech Studio, showcasing how an electric SUV can evolve from a commuter into a trail-capable machine.
Functional Design Meets Electric Power
BigTime reworked Hyundai’s largest EV with a lifted suspension, all-terrain tires, custom wheels, and a roof-mounted light bar. The setup gives the SUV better ground clearance and visual presence.
Inside and out, the concept draws from BigTime’s 1977 “Bud” truck, blending vintage cues with modern EV design. The result is an electric off-roader that looks ready for real use — not just a show floor.
Strong Performance, Zero Emissions
The IONIQ 9 Calligraphy AWD trim delivers up to 422 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque through a dual-motor setup. Instant torque makes it agile on any terrain. That’s roughly on par with a twin-turbo gas SUV — minus the emissions and fuel costs.
Key Specs:
- Powertrain: Dual-Motor AWD
- Horsepower: 422 hp
- Torque: 516 lb-ft
- Platform: E-GMP Electric Platform
- Special Additions: Lift kit, off-road tires, light bar
Hyundai’s Broader Electric Strategy
This concept supports Hyundai’s plan to expand EVs into new lifestyle segments. The company’s U.S. operations — including Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama and Metaplant America — add an estimated $20.1 billion annually to the economy and support 190,000 jobs.
The IONIQ 9 project shows how Hyundai intends to grow its electric portfolio while connecting with enthusiast audiences through design and function.
BigTime’s Influence
Burton and Jobe, known for accessible and creative builds, bring credibility to Hyundai’s push into electric customization. Their BigTime channels will feature the IONIQ 9’s full build process, aiming to inspire new EV modifiers.
Their message is clear: EVs can be fun, capable, and customizable. The IONIQ 9 BigTime Concept delivers that proof — with instant power and no exhaust.
The Future of Off-Road EVs
The IONIQ 9 BigTime Concept marks Hyundai’s first step into electric adventure vehicles. As the industry shifts toward electrification, expect more brands to combine range, capability, and design freedom in this emerging category.
